Dallas Cowboys -America's Team

For Dallas Cowboys fans, the moniker 'America's Team' makes perfect sense. The white and blue, the players and the wins all add up to a near universal love of the team don't they. Don't they? Well, we wanted to look into why the team are called America's Team and to try and justify the title.

It was back in 1978 that the phrase was first used. Bob Ryan, who is currently the Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, was editing the team's season highlight film for that year and wanted a 'different twist'. While compiling the film, he'd noticed that the team's colours where visible wherever they played - they might be in Nebraska or New England but there were always Cowboys pennants, outfits and hats. The colours are still popular all over the country, it's usual to see pennants stuck on the side of computers while people play partypoker and the colours on bumper stickers. They are still very popular.

At the time it really seemed that there seemed to be Cowboys fans all around the USA, and as far as Ryan could see, there were far more than any other team could muster. It really seemed they were the most popular team in the country - from that insight it was only a short step to calling the team 'America's Team'. When a commentator used the term on the TV for the first game of the next season, the name stuck.

Other teams have also claimed to be America's Team, some are based on nothing more than having red, as well as blue and white, in their colours. Others try to make the claim based on fan-based ownership options and while others based on the total number of Superbowl wins. In truth, probably all NFL teams deserve the title, but the Cowboys were the first to use the term and lucky enough for the name to stick.
