In the present day, the name “49ers” evokes images of Lombardi Trophies, and names such as Montana, Rice, Lott and Young. However, the early 60’s franchise merely evoked the term “also-ran.” The 1963 season in particular, was a low-point in the colorful history of the red and gold. In 1962, under the direction of Head Coach Red Hickey, the Niners posted a mediocre 6-8 record, and a fifth place finish in the NFL West. Then, after starting the 1963 season 0-3, the team made a switch in leadership, hiring Jack Christiansen for the top spot, only to finish in the cellar of the West at 2-12.
The one good thing about being at the bottom however, is that the only direction to go is up. Up they did, as the team would blossom into a regular playoff contender by the late 1960’s. Many of the veterans that made up the core of those eventual playoff teams were youngsters and rookies on the 1963 roster. Some of those players featured in RetroCards newest offering include Kermit Alexander, Walter Rock, Len Rohde, John Thomas, Jimmy Johnson, Roland Lakes, Kay McFarland, Carl Kammerer, and the always smiling Charlie Krueger. Other lesser-known players also get their due, such as Mike Dowdle, Bob Waters, Clark Miller and Jim Vollenweider. The set is rounded out by some Niners stars of the late 50’s, such as Eddie Dove, Clyde Conner, Karl Rubke and others.
